Exploiting Deductive Processes for Automated Network Management

2005

This paper focuses on improving network management by the adoption of artificial intelligence techniques. We propose a distributed multiagent architecture for network management, which exploits the dynamic reasoning capabilities of the situation calculus in order to emulate the reactive behavior of a human expert to fault situations. The information related to network events is generated by programmable sensors deployed on the network devices and is collected by a logical entity for network managing where it is merged with general domain knowledge, with a view to identifying the root causes of faults and to decide on reparative actions. The logical inference system has been devised to carry…

Interaction Theory and the Social Network

1967

Interaction theorists have delineated the close association in friendship relations between value consensus, affectional closeness, and interaction. Categorical investigations of the social network have focused upon frequency of interaction with friends and kin. In the present paper a componential theory of attraction in the social network is developed in order to link previous theoretical discussions with the empirical social network categories. Two attractional variables, one based upon consensus and the other upon positive concern, are perceived as interpreting friendship and kinship involvements. Consensus tends to be modal in friendship and positive concern in kinship, though there are…

Transnational Social Network Analysis

2012

AbstractThe following article discusses methods of social network analysis (SNA) as an approach in researching transnational social formations. SNA allows transnationality to be studied through relationships between actors, enabling the investigation of social structures which expand nation-state frameworks. Two empirical examples are used to address the central characteristics of the network analysis approach (focus on relations, systematic collection of data, means of visualising network data) and their relevance for research on cross-border social phenomena. The article also investigates the significance of geographical mobility in the research process, culminating in reflection on how “…

Promoting Students’ Health at University: Key Stakeholders, Cooperation, and Network Development

2021

Background: Cooperation among university units is considered a cornerstone for the promotion of students' health. The underlying mechanisms of health-promoting networks at universities have rarely been examined so far. Shedding light on partnerships is generally limited to the naming of allied actors in a network. Objectives and Methods: In this study, we used network analysis intending to visualize and describe the positions and characteristics of the network actors, and examine organizational relationships to determine the characteristics of the complete network. Results: The network analysis at hand provides in-depth insights into university structures promoting students' health comprisi…

Network Overlap and Network Blurring in Online Social Networks

2016

Online communities and the online social networks embedded become a prominent medium for social interactions. The success of social media depends on users’ willingness to continue investing their time and efforts in the absence of economic rewards, making psychological attachment critical to online communities. While prior studies identify that members do develop psychological commitment to online communities, why and how the commitment arises remain underexplored. This study focuses on the relationship between network overlap, a common feature of online social networks, and affective commitment to an online community. Drawing on the commitment theory and social network boundary theory, w…
